Donations raised at the dinner benefit the St Thomas Care Pantry and St Vincent DePaul.

Volunteers can sign up to assist at these times on the council’s web site for the St Joseph Table event. Volunteers needed to serve at St. Joseph Table!

The St. Joseph Table dinner will be held again this year on March 19, 2011 at St Thomas Parish, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville. The dinner benefits the poor and homeless in the community. In 2010, the St. Joseph Table was a great success in large part to the assistance of Knights from Naperville Council 1369 and their wives. Dinner was served to over 400 guests and $2700 was donated to the community, half of which was given to the St Thomas Care Pantry and half to St. Vincent DePaul. The dinner also gave our council a lot of recognition and appreciation from St Thomas Parish and has lead to increased membership in our council from that parish. St Joseph Table is an Italian celebration that began in Sicily and led to Italians setting a beautiful table (called an altar) and inviting the poor of the community into their homes for dinner. It was celebrated on St Joseph Day as St Joseph was the earthly provider of food and necessities to Jesus and Mary.

Knights (and their wives or significant others) are needed for a shift on Friday, March 18, 2011, from 10 am to 3:00 pm to begin to prepare food for the dinner, set tables and the altar and decorate. Knights (and their wives or significant others) are also needed for two shifts on Saturday, March 19, 2011, from 12 noon to 4 pm and from 4 pm to 8 pm to finish preparing the dinner, running food to the tables, serving the food, acting as bartenders and washing dishes and cleaning up afterwards. Two dinner seatings will be held on March 19, at 4:30 pm and at 6:30 pm.

Volunteers are needed for the following dates and times (click on a slot below to sign up):

If your wife or significant other will be joining you to volunteer, please include their name as a separate volunteer so that we can get an accurate count of total volunteers. Please wear your Knights shirt to the dinner so the council will get recognition in the St Thomas parish for our efforts to assist them. Should you have any questions, please click here to contact Bob Merten.

Knights Needed to Volunteer for St. Joseph Table at St. Thomas on March 18, 2010

St. Joseph's Table

On March 18, 2010, St. Thomas Parish in Naperville is hosting St. Joseph Table, a meal for the poor and homeless and others in the community. Our council has offered to assist St. Thomas by providing help in preparing food, serving meals, acting as bartenders, and cleaning up on both March 17 and March 18. A number of Knights have already volunteered for March 17, so we have that day covered. We need volunteers for Thursday, March 18.

St Joseph Table is an Italian celebration that began in Sicily many years ago during a famine. Townspeople brought bread to the church to be blessed and distributed to the poor. Later, townspeople set a beautiful table (called an altar) and invited the poor to their homes for dinner. St. Thomas is continuing this tradition and served 650 people last year.

Dinners will be served at St. Thomas on 3/18/10 at 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm. The Knights will have two shifts on that day and need to get 12-15 Knights to volunteer for each shift:

12 pm to 4 pm
4 pm to 8 pm

St Thomas is located at 1500 Brookdale Road in Naperville. The event will be held in the gymnasium off the gathering area.

Please contact Bob Merten at (630) 499-5122 or at bobmerten@att.net to volunteer to help St Thomas with the St. Joseph Table.

Knights to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

This year’s celebration of St. Patrick’s Day will begin with an Irish Mass at Saint Thomas the Apostle Church, Naperville on Thursday, March 11th, 2010. After the Mass, there will be a reception at the Church for everyone, with tea, Irish soda bread, and cookies. Dancers from McNulty Irish Dancers and Trinity Irish Dancers will perform. The prelude will begin at 6:30pm with music and Irish readings followed by the Mass at 7:00 pm. Pipes and drums, Irish dancers, and a Knights honor guard will all participate in the ceremony. This is typically a beautiful Mass, and something Knights and their entire family will surely enjoy.

Naperville Knights and their families will once again march in Naperville’s St. Patrick’s Day parade on Saturday, March 13. The parade will line up between 9:15 and 9:30 am in Naperville North’s parking lot on the south side of the school. Parking will be available in the parking lot on the west side of the school. Access to the lot will be off Ogden Ave. from the east bound lane only. The parade will step off at 10:00 AM and proceed through downtown ending on Water St. on the east side of the Municipal Parking Garage. The upper level of the parking garage will be available for parade parking. A limited number of rides will be available from the end of the parade back to NNHS. Marchers are encouraged to car pool and/or plan their own transportation from the end of the parade back to NNHS. The marching unit will be led by a 4th degree color guard followed by Sir Knights in regalia. A car will be available for Knights that wish to participate, but can’t walk the parade route. Please let Paul O’Donoghue, (815) 715-3945, know if you wish to ride ASAP. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree Knights and their families dressed in “holiday green” will follow handing out Tootsie Rolls. This is a fun family activity Knights and their families are encouraged to march to show Naperville the strength and vitality of the Knights of Columbus.

Following the parade, beginning at noon, council 1369 will be serving corned beef sandwiches and hot dogs with all the trimmings, and beverages at their hall at 615 E. Ogden Ave. Stop by after the parade for some warmth, refreshments, Irish music, a bit of Blarney, and fellowship. If you plan to attend, please advise Paul O’Donoghue (815) 715-3945 by Monday, March 8th, so enough food can be prepared.
