Knights to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

This year’s celebration of St. Patrick’s Day will begin with an Irish Mass at Saint Thomas the Apostle Church, Naperville on Thursday, March 11th, 2010. After the Mass, there will be a reception at the Church for everyone, with tea, Irish soda bread, and cookies. Dancers from McNulty Irish Dancers and Trinity Irish Dancers will perform. The prelude will begin at 6:30pm with music and Irish readings followed by the Mass at 7:00 pm. Pipes and drums, Irish dancers, and a Knights honor guard will all participate in the ceremony. This is typically a beautiful Mass, and something Knights and their entire family will surely enjoy.

Naperville Knights and their families will once again march in Naperville’s St. Patrick’s Day parade on Saturday, March 13. The parade will line up between 9:15 and 9:30 am in Naperville North’s parking lot on the south side of the school. Parking will be available in the parking lot on the west side of the school. Access to the lot will be off Ogden Ave. from the east bound lane only. The parade will step off at 10:00 AM and proceed through downtown ending on Water St. on the east side of the Municipal Parking Garage. The upper level of the parking garage will be available for parade parking. A limited number of rides will be available from the end of the parade back to NNHS. Marchers are encouraged to car pool and/or plan their own transportation from the end of the parade back to NNHS. The marching unit will be led by a 4th degree color guard followed by Sir Knights in regalia. A car will be available for Knights that wish to participate, but can’t walk the parade route. Please let Paul O’Donoghue, (815) 715-3945, know if you wish to ride ASAP. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree Knights and their families dressed in “holiday green” will follow handing out Tootsie Rolls. This is a fun family activity Knights and their families are encouraged to march to show Naperville the strength and vitality of the Knights of Columbus.

Following the parade, beginning at noon, council 1369 will be serving corned beef sandwiches and hot dogs with all the trimmings, and beverages at their hall at 615 E. Ogden Ave. Stop by after the parade for some warmth, refreshments, Irish music, a bit of Blarney, and fellowship. If you plan to attend, please advise Paul O’Donoghue (815) 715-3945 by Monday, March 8th, so enough food can be prepared.

Traveling Vocations Cross

Traveling Vocations Cross

Each Sunday a family, couple, or individual will be called forward at the Mass to receive the vocation cross. In taking the cross they commit themselves to pray during the week, in the name of our parish, the vocation prayer in thanksgiving for all those generously sharing in Church ministry and in particular for the gift of sisters, brothers, priests and deacons. They are also asked to pray for an increase in holy vocations.

All of you are invited to participate in this program. We encourage you to sign up for one of the weeks and then to attend the designated Mass that week to receive the cross.

It is our hope that this experience will encourage each of us to take seriously our vocation as a member of the Body of Christ and encourage ALL of us to pray for the gift of vocations to priesthood and religious life (not just the family with the cross for the week!).

We believe the Spirit is calling forth men and women from our faith community to these roles of service. May our prayer help inspire young women and men to be attentive to the movement of the Spirit within them and to step forward in faith and with generous hearts to wherever the Spirit leads them.

The Glory of Catholic Architecture: Temple, Church and Heaven

Join us Monday March 1st in the SSPP Ministry Center Chapel at 7:00 pm for a special event with Dr. Denis McNamara of the Liturgical Institute at the University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein Seminary. In light of possible Ministry Center Chapel refurbishment, Dr. McNamara will be presenting an illustrated talk which examines the deep meaning of liturgical art and architecture.
Discover how Temple precedents in the Old Testament provided an architectural theology fulfilled by Christ, and how today’s church buildings give a foretaste of our future in heaven. Learn to “read” Saints Peter and Paul Church in light of salvation history and the promises of Christ.”

All are welcome to attend!

DENIS R. MCNAMARA is Assistant Director and Faculty Member of the Liturgical Institute at University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein Seminary.
He is author of the recently published, “Catholic Church Architecture and the Spirit of the Liturgy.”
