USCCB Pro-Life Committee Chairman Releases Statement for Respect Life Sunday

USCCB logoWASHINGTON—In a statement to mark Respect Life Sunday, October 4, Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia called attention to those who are most vulnerable in recent debates on health care reform – the unborn, the poor, the elderly and the immigrant – and called upon Catholics to “examine how well we, as a nation and individually, are living up to our obligation to protect the rights of those who, due to age, dependency, poverty or other circumstances, are at risk of their very lives.”

Cardinal Rigali chairs the Committee on Pro-Life Activities of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

Cardinal Rigali noted that the lives of the unborn are those most at risk in America and “despite the opposition of 67% of Americans to taxpayer-funded abortion, all current health care proposals being considered by Congress would allow or mandate abortion funding, either through premiums paid into government programs or out of federal revenues.”

Noting that the unborn are not alone in being under attack in current proposals, Cardinal Rigali called for health care that recognizes the humanity of the immigrant. “How can a just society deny basic health care to those living and working among us who need medical attention? It cannot and must not,” he said.

Cardinal Rigali also addressed a dangerous and false cultural attitude that some persons are not worth protecting because of their perceived “low quality of life.” He stated that “death is not a solution to life’s problems. Only those who are blind to the transcendent reality and meaning of human life could support killing human beings to mitigate economic, social or environmental problems.”

“The antidote to such myopia is to recover an appreciation for the sanctity and dignity of each unique human being,” he said.

Begun in 1972, the Respect Life Program stresses the value and dignity of human life. It is observed in the 195 Catholic dioceses in the United States. This year’s theme is “Every Child Brings Us God’s Smile.” The full statement follows and may be found online at www.usccb.org/prolife/programs/rlp/09rigali-stmt.pdf.

Blood Drive Help Urgently Needed!

Blood DriveWe need one or two Knights who can work the blood drive sign-in table from 7:30 AM until 12:30 PM this Saturday, 9/26 in Zuker Hall.  If one Knight can be found to work all 5 hours, that would be wonderful, and that’s all we need.  But, if one such person isn’t available, we’ll take two who are willing to work 2 1/2 hours apiece.  We are expecting a record turnout, and we simply can’t handle the crowd without more help.  Please volunteer to Darrell Hutton at 630-961-0526 or darrell.hutton@sbcglobal.net.

2009 Tootsie Roll Drive Results!

All the deposits are in the bank and we had a very successful Tootsie Roll Drive. We will definitely be able to help our client organizations in a great way.

The keys to success

1. The Novena requested of Father Milota at our Sept. Knights meeting for good weather was a huge success; prayers answered. Perfect weather.

Thanks Father!

2. More feet on the street! This year we had record breaking numbers of volunteers, over 140 volunteers, some that hadn’t been active in the Knights for years and said “thanks for calling me, I need to get more involved”. This amounted to roughly 400 volunteer hours put in by these folks being on the street and working the hall counting money. I know my brother Knights and I met a lot more people that we had not known before and hopefully built some new acquaintances.

Thanks Brother Knights and also Thanks to my support committee/captains – Terry Ross, Larry Pociask, and Al Knoeck.

3. Great support from the Religious Ed teens. Over 27 teens volunteered to help us out; wow!

Thanks Theresa Pratt!

4. Scouts came out in “packs”!! :) With a very short leadtime due to packs not being finalized yet, we had 8 Scouts come out to help and some did double shifts, great job Scouts.

Thanks Liz Zurek!

5. More locations. This year we had 15 locations that we worked and already planning on more for next year!!! Can you say Farmers Market?? Naperville Saturday Football games??

6. A web magician that put signups on the website and next year is planning an auto signup with reminders.

Thanks Dan Parker!

7. Advertising and phonathon support from our bulletin staff and also meeting room staff.

Thanks Gloria Villasenor and Mary Werner!

8. Thanks to the volunteers at Special Needs Camp who sent 4 Camp youth counselors and also to Western DuPage Special Rec Activities who sent 12 young adults with learning challenges to help us work two of our store locations (I will provide thanks to them via postal mailing). It was great to meet them and they are the reason we do our drive. I know I have a much greater appreciation for the drive and what it is about as a result of being with them and working the drive with them.

All the keys added up to a new record collection for national and local charities!

Thanks again to all for a great drive and also to God for His generosity upon those that will receive the blessings of our work.

SSPP and 40 Days for Life

40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of turning hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion in America.

SSPP has committed to filling two days during the 40 day campaign at the Planned Parenthood in Aurora:  Tuesday, October 20th from 9am-6pm., and Monday, October 26th from 8:30am-4:30pm.  We hope to have several volunteers for each hour.

Please take an opportunity this week to check your calendars and plan to stop next weekend at the sign-up table outside church after mass.

We ask you to prayerfully consider giving your time to help our parish fulfill our commitment.

Labor Day

Come demonstrate the principles of our Order as the Naperville Knights of Columbus March in the September 7th Labor Day Parade! The parade will step off at 10:00 AM from the parking lot south of Naperville North High School and proceed through downtown Naperville.  Marchers should line up between 9:15 and 9:30 AM.  All Knights, their families, and friends are encouraged to march.  Fourth degree Knights should march in their regalia.

If you have further details to share, please feel free to leave a comment (must be logged in).  Also, if you have any pictures you want to share from this event (or any other) please send them to webmaster@napervillekofc.org.
